Nucor Steel sues over Big River Steel mill

By The Associated Press

This article was published August 12, 2014 at 7:24 a.m.

OSCEOLA — Nucor Steel has filed a lawsuit in federal court that attempts to block a competitor from opening a mill in Mississippi County.

The Blytheville Courier News reported that Nucor sued Big River Steel on Monday in Jonesboro. Big River is planning a $1.3 billion steel mill south of Osceola that would employ more than 500 workers.

Nucor accuses Big River of violating the federal Clean Air Act in the lawsuit. Nucor operates two steel mills outside Blytheville and says pollutants from the Big River mill would negatively affect its workers' productivity.

Nucor previously filed several objections to the mill during the approval process. An Arkansas environmental regulatory panel issued an air quality permit for the mill in April.

Big River Steel founder John Correnti called the lawsuit "frivolous."

From a million miles away 1soni. Since this mill is going to be much cleaner than Nucor's as far as air quality shouldn't Big Steel countersue? Nucor is so dang arrogant they put Wal Mart to shame.

I wonder if the same Arkansas environmental regulatory panel was involved in the pig farms near the Buffalo River ???

this may be the most ridiculous lawsuit I've ever heard of. Nucor, which produces the same thing Big River will produce, thinks its workers productivity will be negatively impacted by breathing the same byproducts that it produces? SMH.

Big River should countersue Nucor for violating the antitrust laws (and the anti-monopoly provisions of the Arkansas Constitution) by filing this frivolous lawsuit obviously intended to block a competing steel mill for reasons having NOTHING to do with the environment.

From talking with folks up in Mississippi County, it boils down to the fact that Nucor is terrified that its employees will bolt and go to work at Big River.

That's exactly what it is Pat; I was just in one of Nucor's mills last month

I guess Nucor has decided to be the environmental guardian for Mississippi County. That is refreshing and I am sure that they have never been fined by ADEQ for any air or water violations. Also, I do not remember them contesting the recently constructed coal fired plant near there. Maybe they can unite with the Sierra Club and others in the area and solve other problems in that region.

Nucor doesn't want the competition. They cannot win on facts. They cannot win by just being the best. So they try to use the courts to prevent competition. Sigh.
