18th-century etchings

"Piranesi and Perspectives of Rome," a collection of etchings by 18th-century Italian architectural designer and artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi, goes on display Friday in Gallery I, Fine Arts Building, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock. The UALR art department will host a reception, 5-7 p.m. Aug. 26. Admission is free.

The majority of Piranesi's prints detailing Roman architecture in the exhibit come from the Thompson/Cromwell Folio, which Little Rock architect Edwin Cromwell discovered around 1960 at the home of his father-in-law, Charles Cromwell, also an architect. The daughters of Edwin Cromwell, on behalf of the Thompson and Cromwell families, donated the folio of prints to the UALR permanent collection, and the Cromwell Firm is an exhibit sponsor.

Other Piranesi etchings are on loan from the Arkansas Arts Center and local private collections.

The exhibit will remain up through Oct. 5. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Call (501) 569-8977 or email becushman@ualr.edu.
