Second Thoughts

Mere mention of real 'Purge' freaks officials

A scheduled football scrimmage between Louisville high schools was moved from Friday night to Saturday morning because school officials feared threats to bring "The Purge" movie to life, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported.

On Saturday, Louisville Metro Police told the paper they spoke with the student who told duPont Manual High School's student newspaper that he posted the threat on social media as "a fun thing."

But Dwight Mitchell, a police spokesman, said the department continued investigating threats that were made in response.

"We don't know if it's a hoax or not," Mitchell told the Courier-Journal.

Simon Kenton Coach Jeff Marksberry said safety was behind the decision to delay the scrimmage with St. Xavier.

"Bottom line, we don't know the seriousness of the threat," he said. "... If something does happen, the safety of our kids and staff and everybody else is of the utmost importance for us."

In the movie, which has spawned a summer sequel, there is a fictitious 12-hour period in which all crime becomes legal. In this span, a mob kills people.

The sheriff's office in Jacksonville, Fla., disclosed Wednesday it is looking into similar threats, and the Courier-Journal said rumors of a purge in Detroit are spreading on social media.

According to the paper, the "Louisville Purge" was scheduled to take place between 8 p.m. Friday and 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Just for kicks

Saints' tight end Jimmy Graham was flagged twice on Friday night for dunking over the goalposts after a touchdown.

Oops

The Colorado Rockies have had their share of giveaway glitches this season. Now it's the Detroit Tigers' turn.

The Tigers gave away 10,000 Miguel Cabrera bobbleheads on Friday night at Comerica Park, which we're sure made it a hot ticket. Unfortunately, the bobblehead, which is supposed to feature Cabrera holding his back-to-back American League MVP awards from 2012 and 2013, is marred by one glaring typo.

The bobblehead has Cabrera holding two National League MVP trophies.

Earlier this season, the Rockies misspelled Troy Tulowitzki's name on a jersey. Two weeks later, the Rockies misspelled Nolan Arenado's name on a collector cup.

Forget the BCS

Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN.com, on the new college football playoff format: "I'm going to miss the Bowl Championship Series -- much the same way I'd miss second-hand smoke, cellphones at dinner and people who examine their own earwax."
