Inmate found dead in cell at high-security prison

An inmate at the state Department of Correction's highest-security unit was found dead in his cell early Monday, department officials said.

At 2:50 a.m., security guards were delivering breakfast when they found Steven Hill Jr., 24, hanging by a sheet in his single-man cell at Varner Super Max in Grady, department spokesman Shea Wilson said in an email.

Hill was incarcerated on Aug. 7, 2007, and was serving a sentence of 62 years and six months.

He had a 30-year initial sentence for a rape conviction and a 30-year consecutive sentence for attempted capital murder, both out of Craighead County, Wilson said. Hill also had a 10-year concurrent sentence for second-degree sexual assault out of Mississippi County and a 2 1/2-year consecutive sentence for second-degree battery out of Lincoln County.

Hill would have been eligible for parole on Aug. 7, 2043, Wilson said.
