Marathon coaches set introductory meeting

If 2015 is definitely going to be the year you run or walk 26.2 miles in the March 1 Little Rock Marathon --

Or if 2015 might be, possibly, maybe --

Or if you're not going to run any marathons but you might like to do Little Rock's 13.1-mile half-marathon or its 10K or 5K -- and you live in central Arkansas --

Then the city Parks and Recreation Department's free training team wants to meet you. Head running coach Tom Singleton and head walking coach Hobbit Singleton will conduct an introductory meeting about their central Arkansas team at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Centre at University Park, 6401 W. 12th St.

This is not a workout, just an informational meeting, indoors.

Although the theme for 2015 involves pirates and the race is notable for welcoming costumed racers, there is no need to dress in unusual clothing at this meeting or any workouts.

Training is free, but trainees are required to register, and that can be accomplished online by clicking the "Training" link at littlerockmarathon.com.

The Little Rock Marathon is presented by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and benefits Little Rock Parks and Recreation. Its training program, with groups around the state, is presented by Bill Torrey's Rock City Running and KARK-TV, Channel 4, and is open to anyone, not only people who register for one of the city's events.

The team meets in various locations at 6 a.m. every Saturday, year-round, to help trainees maintain the fitness to run at least 3 miles (aka, a "base"). Currently following a "buildup" schedule aimed at people who have no base yet, the group will begin following a four-month marathon-training schedule Sept. 15. Each weekend workout will include progressively longer routes.

More advanced training schedules are available for those who ask.

More than 2,600 people participated in the last marathon training, according to a news release. More information is available by visiting the website or emailing training@littlerockmarathon.com. The Singletons field calls at (501) 626-8296 or (501) 944-3400.
