HARVEY, Ill. — Authorities are negotiating with two men barricaded in a home and holding a woman and five children hostage in the south suburbs of Chicago.
Officials say two police officers were wounded by gunfire Tuesday afternoon in the incident after responding to a call about a burglary in Harvey.
City spokesman Sean Howard said that Darnell Keel, an 18-year veteran of the police force, is in stable condition at a hospital with a broken arm after an exchange of gunfire. A second officer suffered a graze wound to an arm.
Howard says 26 law enforcement agencies are assisting. An armored vehicle and officers in body armor with high-powered rifles can be seen in the neighborhood.
Howard would not say whether the suspects know the hostages or whether the hostages are related.
