Quit-smoking group to start Sept. 3 at UAMS cancer institute

Starting Sept. 3, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will host a free support group for those who want to quit smoking.

The “Freedom from Smoking” group will meet from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays for seven weeks, and the fourth week will include an additional session, UAMS said in a statement. The program is offered in conjunction with the American Lung Association.

Participants will hear from ex-smokers and will learn ways to manage stress, to avoid weight gain and to remain smoke-free, UAMS said. The group’s leader is Pat Franklin, a certified tobacco treatment specialist and an advanced practice nurse at UAMS, according to the statement.

The group meetings will be held at the patient support pavilion, on the first floor of the cancer institute. Free parking is available in Deck 3 at the corner of Cedar Street and Capitol Avenue.

Those who want to sign up or receive more information may contact Franklin at (501) 944-5934 or plfranklin@uams.edu.
