Poultry processors earn safety kudos

Nearly 100 chicken and turkey facilities were recognized during the National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry -- including 14 Arkansas facilities.

A record number of facilities qualified for recognition despite more stringent requirements, according to a news release.

Butterball's processing facilities in Ozark and Huntsville and Cargill's Springdale feed mill received the highest honors at the conference.

Cobb-Vantress, Mountaire Farms, Simmons Foods, Wayne Farms and Tyson Foods also were recognized for facilities in Arkansas.

The total recordable poultry processing illness and injury rate for 2012 was 4.9 cases per 100 full-time workers per year, down from 5.8 in 2011, according to a news release. In 1994, the rate was 22.7.
