Good morning, class

The rising sun illuminates a rainbow arched over Interstate 630 as 23-year-old Laura Hope drives to Forest Heights Middle School on the first day of her new life as a first-grade teacher.

Written on a notebook in her bag are big statements revealing her feelings about her new job: “I Believe children should be partners in their education process” leads the list.

One by one, 21 pupils arrive escorted by parents displaying a mix of cheer and anxiety. Hope stoops to greet each one. Parents disappear only to reappear for a final wave and hug. And then she’s alone with a room full of wide-eyed first-graders, all depending on her to guide them safely toward their futures.

Will these new pupils and their brand-new teacher make it through their first day without tears?
