Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19, police and LifeNet responded to the residence on a welfare check and found the bodies of Irving Eugene Marshall Sr., 74, and his wife, Deartis M. Flanigan Marshall, 73.

The deaths appeared to be suspicious, so Hot Springs detectives and the crime scene unit responded along with Garland County Coroner Stuart Smedley.

After an autopsy was completed on the victims at the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock, Hot Springs detective Jon Burfeind said it was determined that Irving Marshall had killed his wife and then took his own life.

"There was no doubt it was a murder-suicide," he said, noting both victims reportedly had health problems.
