DOLPHINS

Quinn released

Brady Quinn's attempt to resurrect his NFL career didn't last long.

On Tuesday, shortly before NFL teams had to trim their rosters to 75 players, the Miami Dolphins released Quinn, the quarterback tweeted.

"It was short lived but I enjoyed every second. Thank you MiamiDolphins for the opportunity to play the game I love again. Best of luck to all the players and coaches this season!"

Quinn struggled mightily in practice since being signed by the Dolphins two weeks ago, including throwing several interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

Quinn's release means the Dolphins will play Matt Moore and Seth Lobato in Thursday night's exhibition finale against the St. Louis Rams.

The Dolphins will likely carry two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but need to find one who they can develop on the practice squad.

Quinn, 29, played for the New York Jets and St. Louis Rams last season, but did not throw a pass. He made eight starts for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012, compiling a 1-7 record. He was 3-9 as a starter with the Cleveland Browns in 2007-2009.

CHIEFS

Starters won't play

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jamaal Charles has confidence that the Kansas City Chiefs offense will be in synch when the regular season rolls around a week from Sunday.

Evidently, so does Andy Reid.

The Chiefs' coach said Tuesday that he is unlikely to play any of his starters in Thursday night's exhibition game at Green Bay. Reid had hinted last week that he may break from his norm and play at least some of them after lackluster performances in their first three preseason games.

The Chiefs have struggled while dealing with a rash of injuries and suspensions that could keep several key players off the field in Week 1 against Tennessee.

"I'm going to try to give the guys an opportunity to show. That's one reason I normally hold the one's, so I can get a peer evaluation of these young guys and see what they can do," Reid said. "Right now, we have good competition on this team. And then if they don't make your club they have some worthy plays on tape that other clubs can evaluate."

This is the final opportunity for many players to make an impression. The Chiefs must trim their roster from 75 players to their final 53 by Saturday afternoon.

Reid said that Chase Daniel will lead the No. 2 offense through the first quarter against the Packers. Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray, who are competing for the No. 3 quarterback job, will split the final three quarters with the rest of the reserve players.

"I'm probably going to use all the under guys," Reid said.

SAINTS

LB Butler cut

METAIRIE, La. -- New Orleans Saints outside linebacker Victor Butler, who was seen as a key free agent acquisition in 2013, has been included among eight cuts made by New Orleans as the club prepares to close out the preseason with a roster of 75 players.

New Orleans brought in Butler from Dallas, where he had played his first four NFL seasons, including two seasons under current Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. However, Butler missed all of last season with a torn knee ligament and the 27-year-old has been sidelined much of this preseason by an ankle injury.

Also included in Tuesday's cuts were rookie quarterback Logan Kilgore, defensive back Rod Sweeting, linebacker Kevin Reddick, outside linebacker Rufus Johnson, offensive lineman Manase Foketi, defensive end George Uko and tight end Travis Beckum.

GIANTS

Schwartz hurts toe

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants left guard Geoff Schwartz has a dislocated right big toe and will be in a walking boot for a week to 10 days.

The Giants announced Tuesday that Schwartz was examined by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C., and that he will be evaluated weekly. The team did not indicate how long he would be sidelined.

"Obviously you can't rush him back, but it sure would be good to get him back ASAP rather the other way around," Giants Coach Tom Coughlin said after getting the good news from the doctors. "It is not going to be easy for him. He is a big man."

Schwartz, who signed a four-year, $16.8 million contract in the offseason, will begin rehabilitation after he gets out of the boot. He was hurt in Friday's game against the New York Jets.

Rookie Weston Richburg, a second-round draft pick, has replaced Schwartz at left guard.

McManus traded

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants have traded first-year kicker Brandon McManus to the Denver Broncos for a conditional draft pick next year.

The Giants announced the deal Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the Giants had said that they were waiving McManus, who battled incumbent Josh Brown for the starting job.

However, the strong-legged McManus was traded later to the Broncos, who are in need of a kicker after Matt Prater was suspended for the first four games for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy by drinking beer. He has been in the league's drug program, which includes alcohol, since a DUI arrest on Aug. 12, 2011.

McManus had made both of his field-goal attempts -- from 47 and 46 yards -- and both of his PAT tries in the Giants' exhibition games. He is second in the NFL during the exhibition season with 10 touchbacks. McManus, who was in the Indianapolis Colts' training camp last year, scored a school-record 338 points at Temple.

BENGALS

Schaffer waived

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals waived second-year linebacker J.K. Schaffer as part of their moves to get down to the 75-man roster limit Tuesday.

Schaffer grew up in Cincinnati and attended the University of Cincinnati. He suffered a concussion during the Bengals' second exhibition game. If he clears waivers, he'll revert to the Bengals' injured reserve list.

Rookie cornerback Lavelle Westbrooks also was waived with a thumb injury and will revert to the team's injury list if he clears waivers.

In addition, the Bengals waived second-year tight end Kevin Brock, first-year receiver Jasper Collins, rookie linebacker James Davidson and first-year quarterback Matt Scott.
