Hot Springs mayor's race unsettled after recount

HOT SPRINGS — A recount in this year's Hot Springs mayor's race gave incumbent Ruth Carney a bigger lead, but clerks said it appears some voters were given the wrong ballots in last month's general election.

Challenger Pat McCabe paid $63.50 for Monday's recount of 254 absentee ballots that saw him lose three votes. Carney picked up four and now leads McCabe by 40 votes.

But clerks revealed that voters at one polling site apparently received incorrect ballots, leaving McCabe to consider further action.

The Hot Springs Sentinel-Record reported Tuesday that three ballot styles were sent to one polling location and that it appeared some city voters didn't receive a ballot that included the mayor's race.

McCabe said the voter registry was "badly kept" and that he wanted more information before conceding.
