A Benton man was arrested Thursday after purportedly pulling out a BB gun during an argument at a Murphy USA gas station, police say.

Officers arrived at the gas station about 7:11 p.m., where they made contact with Benton residents Clayton Norris, 32, and Kenneth McDade, 23, Benton Police Department spokesman Lt. Kevin Russell said in a statement.

The two men and witnesses told police that the men had been in an argument, but it escalated when Norris pulled out what looked like a black pistol from his belt, Russell said.

Officers recovered the gun from a trash can at the scene and determined that it was a toy BB gun that "strongly resembled a real pistol," he said.

McDade was cited and released at the scene for disorderly conduct, and Norris was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

He is being held at the Saline County jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

This is an on-going investigation and additional charges may be added.
