FORT SMITH — Former Sebastian County Sheriff Frank Atkinson has died after a battle with lung cancer.
Atkinson's wife, Sharron Atkinson, said Atkinson died Monday after going to a hospital when he had trouble breathing.
The Southwest Times Record reported that Atkinson was elected sheriff in 1998 and retired in 2010.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood.
