Washington County inmate commits suicide

FAYETTEVILLE — An inmate in the Washington County jail awaiting trial in connection with capital murder, committed suicide early Thursday morning, according to the Washington County sheriff's office.

During a routine check of segregated cells, detention officers found David Browning, Jr., 55, of Fayetteville, about 12:25 a.m., slumped beside his bed, unresponsive, with a pair of pants tied around his neck, according the sheriff's office.

Medical staff of the detention center determined that Browning had no pulse, but tried to revive him by performing CPR.

Browning was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1:30 a.m., sheriff's office officials said.

Browning was scheduled to stand trial Jan. 20 in the August stabbing death of 76-year-old Shirley Wolfe.
