Monastery holds annual bake sale

FORT SMITH — St. Scholastica Monastery will have its annual bake sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. today and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday. The sale will be in the retreat center in the east wing of Trinity Junior High School, 1205 S. Albert Pike Ave.

The sale will include homemade bread, rolls, cakes, pies and cookies by the pound, as well as jellies, jams, pickles, candies and jar mixes. Handcrafted items will also be for sale.

Jazz performance benefits church

FAYETTEVILLE — The Claudia Burson Trio and Ben Harris will perform during a benefit jazz concert and CD release party at 7 p.m. Friday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 901 W. Cleveland St. Tickets are $25 at the door. A reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres will follow.

This is the eighth annual winter concert the group has performed in to support the fellowship’s ministries. Claudia Burson on piano, Drew Packard on bass and Steve Wilkes on drums will be joined by Harris, operations director of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas.

“We are really looking forward to sharing this concert with the community,” Wilkes said. “We have recorded a new double album, Peace and Joy, which will be released that evening.”

Service set for grieving parents

FAYETTEVILLE — A candlelight memorial service for parents who have lost a child will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 1400 Rolling Hills Drive.

The ecumenical service to remember children of all ages will include music, prayers and readings, as well as candle lighting and the release of prayer balloons. A reception with refreshments will follow. Parents are welcome to bring a picture of their child.

Lessons, carols program slated

FAYETTEVILLE — The Hendrix College Choir will present a candlelight service of lessons and carols at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church. The service is patterned after the annual King’s College Choir’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service held in Cambridge, England, on Christmas Eve each year.
