Civil War Medicine

NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will present Civil War Medicine from 2-3 p.m. at the Jacksonport Courthouse. Participants will find out how physicians, yarb doctors and granny women treated patients with botanicals found at the river’s edge during and after the Civil War. Medicinal principles and uses of common plants will be discussed. Admission is free.

Cabot Christmas Parade

CABOT — The annual Cabot Christmas Parade will be held at 3 p.m. The parade route will begin on South Pine Street/Arkansas 89 at Panther Trail north, run past the Knights Shopping Center and left onto Pond Street and end at Central Elementary School. The parade’s theme is “A Cabot Candyland Christmas.” Trophies will be awarded in five categories: school/civic, church, business, animal/equestrian and general/personal.

The Rented Christmas

SEARCY — The Performing Arts Center on the Square will present The Rented Christmas, written by Norman C. Ahern Jr. and Yvonne Ahern, Dec. 14 and 19-21 at 219 W. Arch Ave. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and matinee performances on Sundays are at 1:30 p.m., with brunch at 12:30 p.m. For dinner and the show, tickets are $29 for adults and $24 for seniors 55 or older and students. CAVE CITY/STRAWBERRY — White River Health System will hold two community open houses Tuesday in Cave City and Strawberry. An open house to introduce Tammy Lusk, the new provider for the Cave City Medical Clinic, will be held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the clinic, 301 S. Main St. An open house to introduce Amanda Walker, the new provider for the Strawberry Medical Clinic, will be held from 5-6 p.m. at 58 River Drive.

The Nutcracker

Mary’s Memory Trunk

NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will present Mary’s Memory Trunk from 3-4 p.m. at the Jacksonport Courthouse. Mary, dressed as a frontier woman, will talk about traveling to Arkansas from North Carolina in 1855. She will display and discuss the items that she brought with her from North Carolina, what they mean to her and how she uses those items in her home. Admission is free.

Christmas Collection for Veterans

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Museum of Military History, along with the Maj. Jacob Gray Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, are collecting items for veterans at the Fort Roots and McClellan Veterans Affairs hospitals and a community living center. The deadline to make donations is Friday. Needed items include all sizes of clothing, but especially large and XL and men’s size 30-34 blue jeans/khakis); personal-care items, no travel size; entertainment items; and food, no homemade items. No used items or clothing will be accepted. There are also some requests for female veterans. Donations may be made at the Jacksonville Museum of Military History, 100 Veterans Circle, and Cartridge World, 4816 North Hills Blvd. in North Little Rock. Library Open House

BALD KNOB — The Lyda Miller Public Library will hold a Christmas open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to showcase the library’s recent 1,000-square-foot expansion and renovation. An opening ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m., and balloon artist Mr. Pockets will be at the library from 10-11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. Library improvements include a new enlarged children’s area, an expanded public computer center, a reservable community room, two new public restrooms and an expanded parking area. Christmas Mesh Wreath Class

ASH FLAT — A Christmas Mesh Wreath Class, taught by Susan Hill, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Ash Flat Library. The cost of $25 includes all supplies. The pre-payment and registration deadline is Monday. Space is limited, and participants can sign up at the front desk at the library.

Children’s Story Hour

NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will offer a Children’s Story Hour for all ages from 10-11 a.m. at the Jacksonport Courthouse. The story, “Christmas,” is an excerpt from Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Children will learn about how Laura, Mary, Carrie, Maw and Paw spent Christmas in the big woods of Wisconsin in the early 1870s and how their experiences compare to Christmas in 2014. Admission is free.

Myths, Superstitions and Old Wives Tales

NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will present Myths, Superstitions and Old Wives Tales from 2-3 p.m. at the Jacksonport Courthouse. Why in the world would anyone eat a roasted owl? Can you cure a sore throat using only a piece of string? Are spiders really bad luck? All of these topics and more will be discussed. Participants will explore whether there is any truth to the stories and legends. Admission is free.

Scholarship Application Deadline

WHITE COUNTY — The deadline for applying for White County Single Parent Scholarship Fund Inc. spring 2015 scholarships is Jan. 7. The fund awards scholarships to White County single parents who have minor children and are pursuing postsecondary education in order to achieve skilled employment. NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will present Making Clay Christmas Ornaments for Kids, geared to children ages 7-14, from 2-3 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Jacksonport Courthouse. Children will join the park interpreter to make easy and attractive clay ornaments for Christmas. Participants are asked to not wear good clothes and to be prepared to get their hands sticky. AARP Christmas Potluck

CABOT — Cabot’s AARP Chapter will have a Christmas potluck supper, a short business meeting and musical entertainment at 6 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Cabot Senior Center, 600 N. Grant St. Jerry Miller and Val Wilson from Mount Carmel Baptist Church will present a program of Christmas singalong and secular and sacred music. Members and prospective members are invited. First Day Hikes

Basic Orienteering Class

POWHATAN — A basic orienteering class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14 at Lake Charles State Park . The cost of the class is $8 with a limit of 10 per class. Learn how to use a map and compass through hands-on training and activities. No experience is necessary. There will be a beginner course with teams at the end of the workshop.
