A Memphis man shot his wife Sunday and said he had mistaken her for an intruder, Memphis police said Monday.

Officers responded to a shooting at 1329 Longcrest Road at 9:50 p.m., the Memphis Police Department said in a statement. Frank Perry, 61, told officers he had mistakenly shot his wife, according to authorities.

Perry said he heard glass breaking and then saw a silhouette standing in the bedroom doorway, and then he fired shots that struck the person, who turned out to be his wife, police said.

Officers found Perry's wife, Donna Perry, 60, unresponsive on the floor with two bullet wounds, according to the statement. The Memphis Fire Department later pronounced her dead.

Perry has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
