Alabama smothers UAPB from get-go

Alabama held the Arkansas-Pine Bluff women's team to 6-of-50 shooting from the field (12.0 percent), including 1 of 28 in the second half, in a 71-27 victory over the Golden Lions on Tuesday at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

It was the second-fewest points ever allowed in a game by Alabama's women's team.

The Crimson Tide (9-4) built a 16-0 lead before Mollie Campbell hit a jumper for UAPB (2-7) with 15:09 left in the first half. The Golden Lions' deficit grew to 41-4 before Winfrey Mercedes was fouled while hitting a jumper with 1:56 left in the half. She missed the free throw, but UAPB outscored Alabama 7-1 over the rest of the half and trailed 42-11 at the break.

Alabama's biggest lead was 64-20 after a free throw by Oceana Hamilton with 6:29 remaining.

A three-pointer by Diamond Richardson with 8:54 remaining was UAPB's only made field goal of the second half. Richardson led the Golden Lions with 10 points of 2-of-12 shooting. Campbell added five points. Carlisha Walker had eight rebounds for UAPB, and Jazmyne Victorian had seven.

The Crimson Tide, who shot 23 of 70 (32.9 percent) from the field, collected a season-high 18 steals and scored 41 points off UAPB's 34 turnovers. The Golden Lions were outrebounded 62-41.

Briana Hutchen led Alabama with 15 points and had 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Hanna Cook added 11 points and Meoshonti Knight 10.

The Golden Lions travel to Alabama-Birmingham for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
