MEMPHIS — President Barack Obama has commuted the life sentence of a Memphis man convicted of a drug charge.
The Commercial Appeal reported the action on behalf of Larry Nailor comes as part of a push by the Obama administration to reduce excessive sentencing in nonviolent drug cases, especially if convicts would no longer be in prison under current sentencing guidelines.
Nailor was convicted in federal court in 1997 of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The newspaper reported that the charges were in connection to about 50 grams of crack cocaine. He was sentenced to life with 10 years of supervised release.
Obama's order means Nailor's prison sentence will end on April 15.
