Peripheral arterial disease screenings set for Jan. 5

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will offer a free screening for peripheral arterial disease Jan. 5 in Maumelle, the university said Thursday.

The screenings, led by assistant professor of vascular surgery Matthew Smeds, will be available to those age 55 and older who have signs or symptoms of the disease, which include pain in the calves, thighs or buttocks when walking; pain in the feet at rest; or non-healing sores on the toes or feet, UAMS said.

During the screenings, blood pressure measurements will be taken in the arms and legs to look for artery blockages. Risk factors for peripheral arterial disease include smoking, diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke.

The screenings will be held from 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Jan 5 at the Maumelle Senior Wellness Center at 550 Edgewood Drive in Maumelle. Appointments are limited and may be made by calling (501) 851-4344.
