UAPB loses late lead, downs Houston in OT

Arkansas-Pine Bluff blew a 10-point lead in the final five minutes, but it didn't completely fold at Houston.

Marcel Mosley scored eight of his game-high 33 points in overtime as UAPB rebounded from its late slide to hold on for a 61-56 victory over Houston on Wednesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston.

Mosley made 10 of 16 shots from the floor, including 5 of 9 from three-point range, while playing all 45 minutes for the Golden Lions (2-8), who have beaten two nonconference Division I teams in the same season for the first time since Coach George Ivory arrived in 2008.

UAPB, which beat Cal State-Bakersfield, was in control for much of Wednesday's game.

After falling behind 13-8, UAPB went on a 17-0 run over 9 minutes, 38 seconds to take a 25-13 lead. The Cougars, who shot 34 percent, missed seven shots and committed eight turnovers during the stretch.

UAPB led 27-16 at halftime, 37-21 after Jovaughn Love's dunk with 15:29 left and 44-32 after Mosley's three-pointer with 8:07 left. Over the next 7:31, though, UAPB missed three shots and committed five turnovers as Houston's 13-1 run forced a 45-45 tie.

UAPB scored the first eight points in overtime when Ghiavonni Robinson and Mosley made threes and Tevin Hammond made a jumper to make it 53-45.

Then, after Houston pulled to within 57-54, Mosley made four free throws over the final 18 seconds to seal the victory.

Love had eight points for UAPB, which shot 33.3 percent.

Jherrod Stiggers had 16 points for Houston, which had 26 turnovers.

UAPB’s victory tied the series with Houston at 2-2. The Golden Lions also defeated the Cougars 66-64 on Nov. 23, 1996, UAPB’s first season after returning to Division I play.
