Kenneth Lamar Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday before Judge Leon Johnson to second-degree murder, reduced from first-degree murder. Prosecutors also dropped an aggravated residential burglary charge in exchange for the guilty plea.

Police said Smith forced his way into the Elm Street Apartments residence of Kimberly Guy and stabbed 30-year-old Marcus Deshonda McFee to death in October 2013. Authorities said Smith was the ex-boyfriend of a female friend of McFee's, but it wasn't clear Friday if Guy was the woman in question.

About seven hours after McFee died, Smith was arrested about 2 miles away near Smith's South Battery Street home.
