Virginia clamps down, drills Harvard

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Mike Tobey scored 15 points in the first half and No. 6 Virginia held Harvard to one field goal before halftime to roll to a 76-27 victory Sunday.

Malcolm Brogdon also had 15 points to help Virginia (11-0) match its best start since 1992-93.

Corbin Miller led Harvard (7-2) with eight points. The Crimson were coming off a 12-day break for exams.

In other games, Jake Layman had 21 points and 11 rebounds and No. 17 Maryland beat Oklahoma State 73-64 in Stillwater, Okla., to improve to 11-1. Layman hit 3 three-pointers and the Terrapins, as a team, hit 10 three-pointers for the game. Melo Trimble had 16 points, Jared Nickens added 11, and Richaud Pack had 10 rebounds. Le'Bryan Nash led Oklahoma State (9-2) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Hickey finished with 16 points. ...In SEC action, Kenny Gaines scored 15 points, Marcus Thornton added 13 and Georgia easily beat Seton Hall 65-47 in Athens, Ga. Playing their best game of the season, the Bulldogs (6-3) had been off since beating Colorado at home Dec. 7. Fresh legs helped Georgia outrebound the Pirates by 19 and outscore them 16-0 on fastbreak points. Brandon Mobley, Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez each scored eight points to lead Seton Hall (9-2). The Pirates were coming off a 20-point victory at South Florida but looked sluggish from the start. Seton Hall never led, missing nine of its first 12 field-goal attempts, and trailed 22-7 when coach Kevin Willard called timeout at the 12:09 mark of first half. Gaines made his seventh start despite being a game-time decision with a shoulder injury. He had two fastbreak dunks that brought big cheers from the crowd in the second half. ... Michael Kessens scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help Alabama hold off Appalachian State 60-59 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Kessens' basket at the 2:34 mark gave Alabama a 60-56 lead. Dustin Clarke answered with a 3-pointer with 1:56 left to pull Appalachian State within one, but Frank Eaves' contested 3-pointer with 2 seconds left hit off the side of the backboard, allowing Alabama to escape. Levi Randolph had 14 points for Alabama (8-3). Ricky Tarrant added 11 points and Jimmie Taylor had seven blocks. Tommy Spagnolo led Appalachian State (3-6) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Clarke and Eaves added 13 points apiece. Alabama took its first lead since the opening minute of the game at 52-51 with 7:34 left. Appalachian State held a 29-27 lead at halftime after holding Alabama to 9 of 28 shooting and forcing nine turnovers.
