Mixed results halfway through Arkansas duck season

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas game officials are reporting mixed results as the duck season hits the halfway point.

The final part of the duck season opens Friday and ends Jan. 25. The state Game and Fish Commission said Wednesday that despite recent rains, many of the state's public hunting areas have remained dry. Reservoirs aren't filled, and bottomland flooding in the state's river basins is limited.

With the start of November colder than usual, duck numbers were higher than average, but over the last two weeks the numbers have been substantially unchanged. Compared to the longterm average, the population estimate is now about 30 percent lower that expected.

Reports from the field say some hunters are finding ducks here today, gone tomorrow. Land managers who artificially flood their fields have had greater success.
