23 now in running for university post

Fourteen more people have applied for the chancellor's job at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, increasing the number of potential candidates to 23, according to information released by the University of Arkansas System based on an Arkansas Freedom of Information Act request.

The latest round of applicants includes the head of a two-year campus in Camden and a high-level administrator at a community college based in Bentonville.

UA-Monticello Chancellor Jack Lassiter, 69, who has led the 3,850-student university for nearly a decade, plans to retire. Lassiter's announced departure date is Jan. 5.

A search firm, Witt/Kieffer based in Oak Brook, Ill., is being used to find applicants. The firm has a $110,000 contract.

The latest applicants, according to the UA System -- including their current or latest positions based on the applicants' resumes -- are:

• Anthony Bland, media technician, Little Rock School District, since 1999.

• Paula Phillips Carson, assistant vice president for institutional planning and effectiveness at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette since 1991.

• Craig Clark, executive director of the Wellsville Campus and dean of Applied Technology, Alfred State, a part of the State University of New York, in Alfred, N.Y., since 1996.

• Timothy Cornelius, vice president for learning: global business, health professions, external programs and adult basic education, Northwest Arkansas Community College, in Bentonville, since 2011.

• Shannon Fleming, executive director of the University of Southern Mississippi Foundation since 2013.

• Valentine Udoh James, professor, Clarion University in Clarion, Pa.

• Corbet Lamkin, chancellor of Southern Arkansas University Tech in Camden since 2008.

• Richard McCallum, vice president for academic affairs at Iowa Wesleyan College since 2013.

• Betsy Vogel Boze, senior fellow of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities since 2014.

• Sang (Nathan) Yun, general counsel and chief administrative officer, Samsung Chemical (USA) Inc., 2007-2014.

Earlier this month, the UA System office released the names of nine applicants, including Steve Rook, vice president for academic and student affairs at Rich Mountain Community College in Mena.

Lawmakers set the UA-Monticello chancellor position's maximum annual public salary at $196,974 for the fiscal year that ends June 30. Arkansas Code 6-63-309 allows public universities to pay specified employees up to 25 percent above the state-set maximum from public funds, and the salaries are often supplemented with private funding for top administrators and research faculty.
