Gov. Mike Beebe has announced his intent to grant five pardons.

Beebe said in a news release Wednesday that each of the five have completed all jail time, fulfilled all parole- and probation requirements and paid all fines.

The five are Bobby Douthit of Lowell; James Hosford of Memphis; Cloris Jean Espinosa Madrid of Rogers; Jeffrey Petty of Beebe; and Latonya Tripp Washington of Forrest City.

Douthit was convicted of theft; Petty of theft and related charges; Washington of theft and cocaine possession; Madrid of delivery and possession of methamphetamine; and Hosford of possession and delivery of marijuana.

There is a 30-day waiting period for public comment before final action is taken.

I like Beebe, however, I have never understood why we give governors and presidents the sole authority to pardon people. Are they that much smarter than the law enforcment officials, attorneys, jurors and judges who helped to convict these people?

It is not fair how some people are given the opportunity to be granted a pardon simply b/c they can afford to be represented by an attorney to plea their case. Others have been convicted with no hope for the future if the rules are adjusted for some I thought one couldn't be granted a pardon once a new felony us committed. Latonya Tripp Washington was convicted on two separate dates and is seeking a pardon for crimes from 1993 and 2000 this is a 7 year lapse in time from 2 different counties. Man $$$$ will sho do some things for you. Keep trying Skhemer!
