Former UAMS dean donates $275,000 to university

This article was published February 6, 2014 at 12:01 p.m.

A former dean of two University of Arkansas for Medical Services colleges has donated $275,000 to construct a fountain on campus.

The university said Thomas Bruce made the donation in memory of his wife, Dolores Bruce, who died in January 2013.

Bruce was the inaugural dean of the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health from 2001 to 2002 and dean of the College of Medicine from 1974 to 1985.

The fountain is under construction in front of the UAMS Medical Center. It will feature a basin that is 18 inches deep and 50 feet in diameter with a 25-foot center spray and eight 15-foot-high sprays arching the center.

Dolores Bruce was committed to helping others as well as to beautification through the arts and nature. This memorial fountain will be a fitting tribute to her commitment to others.

I don't want to sour a beautiful donation/gesture, but couldn't that money be put to better use, given the recent budget issues at UAMS?

Well said Delta2! The man can do with his money as he pleases but it would have been nice if someone had encouraged him to steer that money elsewhere to where it is sorely needed and still put her name on it somehow.
