U.S. 49 river bridge work to start Monday

Work on the U.S. 49 bridge over the Mississippi River near Helena that had been set for this week has been rescheduled to start Monday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said Wednesday.

A crew will install along the bridge railings a conduit that will allow electronic equipment to monitor the river current. Workers will shut a lane of traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through March 2, highway officials said. Crews will alert traffic with warning signs, barrels and flaggers, the department said.

The monitoring device will be installed later, highway officials said.

The work had been scheduled to start Wednesday but was postponed because of weather.
