Hulse Leads Comeback Win

WOLVES DOWN CARDINALS

LINCOLN - Payton Hulse owned the fourth quarter for Lincoln on Friday night.

Hulse scored 10 of his 14 points in the final quarter to lead Lincoln to a 54-47 comeback victory over Farmington at the Wolves’ gym. Lincoln (17-8, 9-2) moved into first place in the 4A-1 Conference with its second victory over the Cardinals (17-5, 9-2) in league play.

Lincoln appeared in trouble after falling behind 15-4 in the first quarter. But the Wolves gradually cut the defi cit then sped ahead with a 10-0 surge in the third quarter. Hulse, a senior guard, had two 3-pointers and four free throws in the fourth quarter when Lincoln outscored Farmington 16-4.

“They came out andsmacked us right in the face,” Lincoln coach Tim Rich said of the Wolves’ early deficit. “We got down a little bit but the boys did a great job in answering.”

Freshman Matt Thomas finished with 23 points for Farmington, which still led by eight points late in the third quarter. But turnovers and poor shooting in the fi nal eight minutes prevented the Cardinals from avenging a 48-42 defeat to Lincoln on Jan. 10. Farmington jumped to a 15-4 lead Friday behind Thomas, who had three of the Cardinals’ four 3-pointers in the fi rst quarter.

Guard Dylan McConnell started a 10-0 run for Lincoln when he made a rebound basket after being left alone under the goal to end the third quarter. Hulse opened the fourth quarter with a3-pointer and Ossy Escareno followed with a twisting inside move to tie the game 43-43. Hulse scored again, followed by baskets from Escareno and Tyler Cummings to stretch the Lincoln lead to 50-46.

Escareno finished with 14 points while McConnell added 7.

GIRLS

FARMINGTON 55, LINCOLN 27

Farmington had no problemwith Lincoln after winning by only three points in the teams’ fi rst meeting.

Tichina Scales scored 18 points and Haley Maxwell 12 for the Lady Cardinals. Jacie Neeley scored 10 to lead the Lady Wolves.

Tahlon Hopkins added for Farmington (18-4, 10-1), which led 12-2 after one quarter and 25-8 at halftime. Lincoln failed to score at least 10 points in three of the four quarters.
