A winter storm made roads in south Arkansas slick overnight and prompted a number of schools to cancel or delay class for the day.
The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported some form of icy conditions on many of the major highways in the state's southernmost two rows of counties.
A mix of precipitation including snow and freezing rain fell overnight in parts of south Arkansas. Much of southern and southeastern Arkansas had ice-covered roads while sleet was reported in the Pine Bluff area, the Highway Department reported at 9 a.m. on its online map. Parts of eastern Arkansas between Forrest City and Helena-West Helena were also seeing slick conditions midmorning.
Several schools and universities called off class for the day, including Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia and the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Click here for the full list.
The National Weather Service said light snow or flurries may fall along the Mississippi River as the morning progresses, but any accumulation is not expected to be significant.
Roads, meanwhile, will improve as the temperature creeps above freezing by the afternoon.
