River level lowered to aid search for Ashdown woman

FULTON — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lowered the level of the Red River to help searchers hoping to recover an Ashdown woman missing since an icy traffic accident.

Millwood Lake flows into the Red River near Fulton. The water level was initially lowered so much that searchers had trouble keeping their boats afloat.

Several vehicles collided during icy weather early Saturday and police say when a sliding tractor-trailer approached the area, two people either jumped into the water or were knocked into it. One person was rescued but the other remains missing.

Emergency managers say if the woman isn't found by the end of the day Friday, crews would evaluate whether to continue.

Crews from Arkansas and Texas are searching and Texas searchers brought in sonar to aid them.
