A driver fled the scene Wednesday afternoon after her car hit a 12-year-old child who was walking home from school in Little Rock, authorities said.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Estefana De Maria Garza-Alarcon, was arrested on a traffic stop a short time later, Little Rock Police Lt. Sidney Allen said in a statement. She faces charges of failing to stop at an injury accident and driving without a license.

The 12-year-old was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Allen said the child was in stable condition.

Police say the hit-and-run happened about 4:30 p.m. at Baseline and Oman roads.

"A 12 year old child was lying in the street and it appeared that he had been hit by a blue Chevrolet Aveo," Allen said in the statement. "The driver saw the officers, then got into her car a left the scene."

The first officer on scene stayed with the unconscious child. The fleeing car was stopped a short time later at Baseline and Chicot roads, police said.

Garza-Alarcon remained in the Pulaski County jail Thursday morning with bail not yet set.
