MARY GAIL DELOZIER, 62, of Little Rock died peacefullyMonday night, Feb. 10, 2014, at her home in Fox Glen Apartments. Born July 16, 1951, in Little Rock, she graduated from Central High School and went on to get a bachelor’s and a mastersdegree from UALR in elementary education. She taught at Williams Elementary School and finished out the last of her 31 years teaching at Fair Park Elementary. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Louise Delozier; and her father, William H. Delozier. She had been a member of Agape Church since 1997 and was an avid animal lover.

She leaves behind first and foremost her beloved dog, Cupcake; a sister, Wanda L. Delozier Truby; brother-in-law, Casey Truby; three nephews and their wives; seven great-nephews; two great-nieces; one first cousin; one second cousin and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be at 10: a.m. Monday, Feb. 17 at Agape Church, 701 Napa Valley Drive, Little Rock, Ark. 72211. BERNICE T. ELIAS, 85, of Little Rock died Feb. 10, 2014. She was born July 14, 1928, in Weiner,Ark., to Henry F. Ritter and Sophia Ruesewald Ritter. Mrs. Elias taught school for 46 years in Arkansas and Texas. She worked 10 years as an employee of the state.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill E. Elias; her parents; three brothers, Donald J. Ritter, Henry N. Ritter and Paul E. Ritter. She is survived by one sister, Teresa Schneider (Lawrence); two brothers, Raymond Ritter (Mary) and Charles Ritter, all of Jonesboro. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her “special angel,” Jo Schneider.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 13 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth, 5800 W. 12th, Little Rock (501) 661-9111. BETTY COTHREN GLASSCOCK, age 84, of Little Rock passedaway on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock after a two month battle with pneumonia. She was born Aug. 27, 1929, to Griffin and Ina Cothren and was raised in the Morning Star community near Paragould, Ark. Betty graduated from Lakeside High School in 1947 and later moved to Little Rock, where she met her partnerfor life, Dewey Glasscock. They were married in 1949 and lived in several states before returning to Little Rock in 1959. Betty was a Christian and a very active member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church. Above all, she loved her family and they will all miss her dearly.

In retirement, Betty devoted much time to becoming a Lifetime Master Gardener. She served at the greenhouse on the grounds of UAMS as a volunteer and was a member of the Greenhouse Committee. She enjoyed traveling on Master Gardener tours, nationally and internationally, visiting botanical gardens.She was a longtime member of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class at Pulaski Heights Methodist and devoted much effort to planning trips for the Primetimers Group. Betty’s favorite leisure activity was reading books and meeting with her book club, Thursday Afternoon Ladies Literary Club.

Betty is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dewey; and four children, Calvin (Chrissy), Paul (Sue), Carobeth Kelly (John) and Susan Gammill; and nine grandchildren (by age) Daniel Glasscock, Gregory Glasscock, Max Duerr, Sarah Gammill, Ryan Kelly, Jason Gammill, Jack Kelly, Mackenzie Glasscock and James Glasscock.

She is also survived by her siblings Wava Lewis, Winford Cothren, James Cothren , Carolyn Anderson, Larry Cothren and Rita Moore; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Shirley Maher and Sheila Mode.

BENNIE “BEN” HAYNES HENLEY, 86, of Mabelvale passedaway Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014. He was born in Morrilton to Benjamin Franklin Henley and Naomi Dexter Haynes Henley and was a member of the Church of Christ. He wasU.S. Army veteran of WWII and retired from Baptist Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Verna Justus Henley; children, Franklin Lee Henley (Vicki) of Little Rock, Elaina Carol Riddle (C.R.) of Cabool, Mo., Karen E. Akins (Bill) of Benton, Nelson Red of Atlanta, Ga., and Lee Ann Houchens (Todd) of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bobbie Jewel Henley.

WALTER (WALT) JEFFUS, 57, passed away suddenly on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, of an apparent heart attack. He was born Sept. 13, 1956, in Camden, Ark.; Walt graduated from Camden Fairview High School in 1975 and then attended University of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Virgil and Dorothy Jeffus and Dentious and Avis Rogers, all of Camden; also a very special uncle, Walter Rogers of Little Rock. Survivors include his partner of 27 years, Alex Vest of Little Rock; his parents, Hugh and Mona Jeffus of Camden, Ark.; brother, Mike (Donna) Jeffus, of Texarkana, Ark.; sister, Stephanie (Steve) Clyde, of Houston, Texas; exsister-in-law, Vicki Dilworth, of Olive Branch, Miss.; special aunt and uncle, Ruth and Ken Renfro of Houston, Texas; Ann Young, of Camden, Ark.; Jan Rogers, of Little Rock; and Leo Rogers of Camden, Ark.; three nephews and one niece. Also special friends, Lew Elmore and Alex Dellinger of Little Rock.

Walt loved horticulture and one of his greatest pleasures in life came from digging in the dirt. Walt was very devoted to his church, his family and his friends. They always came first. Walt never met a stranger, and everyone who ever met him had their lives enriched by his friendship. Walt was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and volunteer.

BETTY SUE (LEWIS) THOMASSON, age 84, died Feb. 11 ather home in Little Rock after a brief illness. She was born to Alwin and Fannie Lewis in Wilton, Ark., on Oct. 26, 1929, three days ahead of the Great Depression. Growing up in those days prior to World War II forged her traits of independence, frugality, self-reliance and personal responsibility. She graduated from Ashdown High School andattended Henderson State College, where she met her future husband, Lloyd Thomasson. She and Lloyd settled in Little Rock, where he worked for National Old Line Insurance Company. In later years, they worked together in two family-owned businesses. Lloyd died in 1994.

She is survived by a brother, Allen (Joyce) Lewis of Hot Springs; two sons, Bruce (Carol) Thomasson of Maumelle and Kenneth (Lynn) Thomasson of Arlington, Texas. Additionally, she is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Melanie (Jon) Goodell of Little Rock, Grace Thomasson of Maumelle and Nicholas Thomasson of Arlington, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Tristan and Eleanor Goodell of Little Rock.

She will be laid to rest in a graveside service in Nashville, Ark., on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, she asked that friends and family consider a donation to the Salvation Army Annual Fund.

FRANCES R. YOUNG, 87, of Little Rock passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., to Carl and Polly Jarmon Green and was of the Baptist faith. She was an LPN, a Master Gardener and won numerous awards for her needlepoint at the Arkansas State Fair.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold E. Young; brothers, Jack and Joe Green ;and sister, Carla Boyd, she is survived by her sons, Mike Young of Little Rock and Pat Young and wife, Liz ,of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and grandson, Patrick Young, also of Scottsdale.

ARKADELPHIA - Dr. Margaret Gill Hein, an Arkadelphia native,died February 10, 2014. She was an only child, born June 25, 1921, to Joseph Mote and Lula Helms Gill and was the only granddaughter of George W. and Cora Spears Gill. Her husband, Dr. W.J.(Bill) Hein, died March 11, 2001. Margaret grew up in Arkadelphia, graduated from Arkadelphia High School, 1939 Valedictorian and from Henderson State Teachers’ College (now HSU) second in the class of 1943. During those years she moved easily between her dad’s Clark County Cattle Auction (Saturday sale) and the academic world, equally at ease in both areas. Throughout her life she remained connected with people in every walk of life.

Her educational career began with teaching Latin at Arkadelphia High School during her last two years in college; later teaching in Okalona and Mountain Pine. Following two years in the WAC, she returned to education, earning a M.A. at SMU (1950) and then pursuing work on the Ph.D. at UT - Austin, while teaching at SMU during the academic year with summer studying.in Austin (Ph.D. 1956).

In 1957 Margaret joined the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) staff in Washington, D.C. as Assistant Secretary, later moving to Executive Secretary for six years, the first person to serve two three-year terms.

Margaret moved from Washington, D. C. to Mills College in Oakland, California, Head of Teacher Education (1965), where she met and married Bill; she then moved to Lehigh University in Pennsylvania as Associate Dean of Education when Bill became Vice-President of East Stroudsburg State University.

Margaret continued speaking and consulting at local, state national and international arenas.She served as representative of the United States to NATO in Brussels, Belgium, as well as representative to a British, Canadian and American meeting at Ditchley Park, England. She was also a national evaluator for the Ford Foundation of grant programs for secondary schools and junior colleges across the United States. In fact, her speaking, consulting and evaluating work took her to all the states, except Alaska. Margaret also taught at the University of Puerto Rico (two summers), the University of Arizona, Lehigh University, HSU (one semester),and East Stroudsburg State University, Pennsylvania.

Always Margaret kept busy with a variety of educational, city, county, state and humanitarian activities. When the Heins retired to Arkadelphia in 1983, she helped start the Humane Society of Clark County and at the same time, started a recycling program to support the Humane Society. She directed the legislative Commission for School District Reorganization when President Bill Clinton was governor.

When the Heins moved to Tucson, Arizona for Bill’s health, she continued her customary involvement: Northminister Presbyterian Church, the Southern Arizona Veterans’ Administration Health Center and membership on the board of the Educational Enrichment Foundation. On returning to Arkadelphia a second time (2004) after Bill’s death, she re-entered the Colerean and Philharmonic Clubs and the Presbyterian Women activities and Democratic Woman of Clark County.

Margaret leaves two mutually adoptive families. Dr. John and Kate Galgiani (Jessica and Allison) and Mr. Charles and Donna Singleton (Emily and Alex), both of Tucson, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 17th at First Presbyterian Church in Arkadelphia. Interment will be in Richland Cemetery. CABOT - Janell Downes, 72, of Cabot passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014. She was bornOctober 6, 1941 in Enola, Arkansas to the late Davis and Stella May McDowell Rickett. She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren and loved to quilt and sew.

She is survived by her daughter, Pam Payne, of Oppelo; three sons, Allan Downes, David Ray Downes and Richard Downes (Marion), all of Cabot; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anita Charette, of Austin and Louise Gossett, of Ward; brother, Brenton Rickett of Jacksonville; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeannie Anderson; four brothers and three sisters.

CASSCOE - Bernice Opal Payer, 91, widow of Ernest Dewey Payer, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at her home. Mrs. Payer was born December 7, 1922, in Casscoe to Hugh Cooper McGaughey and Minta Mae Appleby Mitchell. She was a homemaker and member of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Payer was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved working in her vegetable garden.

Survivors are two daughters, Erna Louise Kirkemier and husband Rodger of Casscoe and Betty Carol Oliver and husband Gary of Stuttgart; three grandchildren, Carol Nock of Hot Springs, Natalie Oliver Woods and husband Lee of Little Rock and Dr. Gretchen Oliver of Auburn, Alabama; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer Nock, Cameron Nock and Jaxen Nock of Stuttgart and Mary Oliver Woods of Little Rock.

HASKELL - Elva Arline Cooper Collatt, age 101, of Haskell, passedaway Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Arline was Mt. Harmony Missionary Baptist Church’s oldest member. Born October 4, 1912, she was the firstborn of seven children of Dock WashingtonCooper and Adelia Delena Phillips Cooper. On October 12, 1930, she married Dave Collatt, who preceded her in death in 1990.

Arline is survived by her children: Evelyn Callahan and husband Larry, Marilyn Murrow, and Kenneth Collatt and wife Judy. Other survivors include five granddaughters: Dana Compton (Kevin), Cheryl Jones (Eddie), Paula Bean (Danny), Tamara Lunsford (Charles), and Amity Farr (C.J.); several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

After raising a family and being a housewife for many years, Arline worked in retail clothing sales in Benton until retirement. Across the years she created many beautiful quilt tops and finished quilts of various patterns. Whether talking on the phone with the countless friends for whom she served as a sort of anchorwoman, or traveling, or camping out, she was never without a quilting bag filled with pattern pieces, cut and ready for sewing. For years she was a dependable participant in local quilting circles, at which meetings theother ladies always looked forward to her homemade custard pie.

Arline attended many gospel singings in and around Saline County. She was also a faithful alto singer for gatherings around the family piano.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Heartland Rehab in Benton, to the team from Saline Memorial Hospice, to the late Dr. Brian Sudderth and to Dr. Evelyn Cathcart for the care and support they provided during the last few years.

A special “thank you” also goes to Geraldine King and Rita Scoggins, from Mt. Harmony Missionary Baptist Church, who visited Arline weekly.

STEPHENS - Bruce Vincent Formaggio, age 65, of Stephens, died February 11, 2014 at John R. Williamson Hospice House in El Dorado. He worked at the Chicago Sun Times Newspaper and the Dallas Times Herald and was a U.S. Postal Carrier.

Bruce was in the U.S. Army and served a tour in Vietnam in 1970. As a Military Policeman in the 18th Military Police Brigade, he initially was stationed at Pershing Field in Saigon with the 92nd MP Battalion, 300th MP Company. Bruce was transferred to the 557th MP Company and promoted to Specialist Fourth Class. Bruce was awarded a position in the Elite Combined Police Patrol unit.

He is preceded in death by his father, Vincent S. Formaggio. He is survived by his wife, Ludie Margaret Primm Formaggio of Stephens; beloved mother, Janette L. Formaggio of Harwood Heights, Ill.; brothers, Steven Formaggio and wife, Pamela of Affpon, Mo. and Scott Formaggio of Harwood Heights, Ill.; sister, Barbara Ann Formaggio-Rajkovich and husband, Sergio of Chicago, Ill.; nephews, Francisco Formaggio of Alvarado, Texas, and Vincenzo Rajkovich of Chicago, Ill.; nieces, Larissa Formaggio of San Antonio, Texas and Elisabetta Rajkovich of Chicago, Ill; great nephews, Samuel Moreno and Mark Leal Jr. both of San Antonio, Texas; and great-niece, Corinne Formaggio of San Antonio, Texas.

THORNTON - Mary Lynn McAteer Helberg, of Thornton, Arkansas, born July 27, 1945, passing away February 11, 2014. She was welcomed into heaven by her parents: Lloyd McAteer, Gerald & Leona Simms, and her precious “Papa” Marian Trucks.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years Carl Helberg, her daughters: Tina Pennington (Stephen) of Bryant, Arkansas, and Marsha Waddill (Brian) of Collierville, Tennessee, her four dear grandchildren who called her Nanna: Drew, Seth, and Sean Pennington and Emily Waddill. She is also survived by her sisters Cherie O’Mary (Marvin) and Judy Bever (Russell), and a great many close friends.

Mary was a brave, vivacious lady with a love of travel, shopping, sewing, and cooking, known for her amazing homemade desserts and rolls, cheese dip for breakfast, and the stylish clothing she designed. She jokingly described herself in the later years as a “retired housewife”.

She was the widow of Frank J. Fellone, her beloved husband of 50 years. MILTON, Fla. - William (Frank) Fisher passed over Sunday, February 9, 2014, in his home in Milton, Florida, surrounded by family. Frank was a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, and had been a resident of Milton since 1961. Frank served his country in, and retired from, the United States Navy.
