Hot Springs' downtown parking meters get the hook

HOT SPRINGS — Hot Springs is preparing to remove about 250 parking meters from its downtown tourist area.

The city board approved a resolution Tuesday to take out the meters.

The meters are on Central, Ouachita and Prospect avenues, as well as Spring Street and the parking plaza at Exchange street.

The Sentinel-Record reported that the 247 meters being taken out is equal to about half of the parking meters in the city.

City officials say most downtown merchants support the move. Mayor Ruth Carney suggests that businesses ask their employees to not park in the unmetered spots so they'd be available for customers.
