Death of Nebraska inmate being investigated

BEATRICE, Neb. — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate in southeast Nebraska's Gage County Detention Center.

Beatrice radio station KWBE reports that police were summoned to the jail just before 4 a.m. Saturday.

Deputy Gage County Attorney Amanda Spracklen-Hogan has confirmed that a male inmate had died at the jail. She and other authorities are not releasing the man's name or details on how he might have died pending notification of his family.

Spracklen-Hogan says officials tried to revive the man, but couldn't.

The Nebraska State Patrol will investigate. State law requires a grand jury investigation any time a person died in state custody or during in the process of being detained.
