Happy Trails: Lake Charles State Park

LAKE CHARLES STATE PARK

Location: From U.S. 67 at Hoxie, go 8 miles north on U.S. 63 to Black Rock, then 6 miles south on Arkansas 25. Park in “Trailhead” lot near campground entrance and begin with White Oak Trail.

Length: White Oak Trail is an easy 1.5-mile loop on a slightly hilly peninsula. Add the park’s three other trails for about 3.6 miles.

Main attractions: The645-acre fishing lake is the perfect backdrop for these easy hikes, ideal for the entire family.

Hazards: Dirt sections of trails quickly turn muddy after a rain. Wear sturdy shoes and take a hiking staff.

Dog, bike, tyke friendly? Perfect for all three.
