ASU’s defense sets tone early

The Arkansas State women’s basketball team got defensive Wednesday night in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves held Texas-Arlington under 39 percent shooting and forced 25 turnovers in a 73-47 blowout at the Convocation Center.

The victory came four days after ASU lost 77-76 loss at Louisiana-Lafayette, as the Red Wolves avoided losing consecutive games for the first time in Sun Belt Conference play.

Aundrea Gamble scored 19 points and had seven rebounds, Jalen O’Bannon had 15 points and Carlisha Wyatt added 10 points for the Red Wolves (17-9, 11-3), who maintained a one-game lead over Texas State in the league standings with four games remaining.

Texas-Arlington (3-21, 2-11) took a 5-0 lead before ASU went on a 14-0 run, capped by Jessica Flanery’s three-pointer with 12:47 left. The Red Wolves led by at least five points the rest of the game. ASU led 39-26 at halftime and opened the second half with a 13-0 run to go up 52-26.

Desherra Nwanguma had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Texas-Arlington, which has lost three in a row.
