Baroque guitarist

Spanish Baroque guitarist Xavier Diaz-Latorre will give a concert titled “The Harmonic Poem” at 7:30 p.m. today Recital Hall, Arkansas State University Fine Arts Center, 2412 Quapaw Way, Jonesboro. The program will include works by 17th- and 18th-century composers Gaspar Sanz, Santiago de Murcia and Francisco Guerau. The concert is part of the university’s Lecture-Concert Series. Kenyan quartet

Also at ASU this weekend, the Moipei Quartet - pronounced “Moy-pay,” triplets Mary (soprano), Martha (second soprano) and Magdalene (deep alto), 19, and sister Seraphine (alto), 17 - from Kenya will headline a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Riceland Hall, Fowler Center, 201Olympic Drive, Jonesboro.

Congolese master drummer and dancer Chief Bokulaka’s one-act show, “Ancestral Drummers of the Congo,” replaces the originally scheduled Kenyan Boys Choir to open the show, part of the university’s Riceland Distinguished Performance Series. Sponsor is Sodexo.

UCA gallery talks

Virginia-based artist Kirsten Kindler, as her “Paper Construction” exhibition closes today, will give an informal gallery talk at 1:30 p.m. in the Baum Gallery, Room 143, McCastlain Hall, University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

Arkansas artist Dusty Mitchell, based in Mountain View, who has appeared on Bravo’s TV show Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, will lecture on his work at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the art lecture hall adjoining the gallery.

Mitchell will also serve as the juror for UCA’s annual Student Competitive, opening March 2 in the gallery with a 5-7 p.m. reception. Admission to both talks and the reception is free.

Anatomy of Gray

Civil rights series

Also at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center this weekend, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture, as part of a nationwide initiative, will screen four films on civil rights history with members of the UALR history faculty, starting with The Abolitionists, 1 p.m. Saturday. Carl Moneyhon will moderate a post-screening discussion.

California visitor

Springer Theatrical’s national touring production of California Dreaming, a musical about the ’50s and ’60s featuring songs by the Mamas and the Papas, the Beach Boys, The 5th Dimension, the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, will be onstage at 7 p.m. Friday at the Ritz, 306 W. Main St., Blytheville, under the umbrella of the Arts Council of Mississippi County.

A gala 5:30-6:30 p.m. “meet the artist” reception at the Chamber of Commerce, at 300 W. Walnut St., open to patrons, sponsors and advance ticket holders, will precede the curtain.
