Dr. Johnny Moore has resigned as president of Philander Smith College, the school announced Thursday afternoon.

After less than two years at the position, Philander Smith College President Johnny Moore has resigned.

The announcement came in a statement from the downtown Little Rock school Thursday afternoon. Moore is stepping down from his post to “pursue other personal and professional opportunities.”

Moore, a Philander Smith alum, was hired as the president of the school in July 2012 and was formally invested in the position May 3, 2013.

In a statement, Philander Smith board of trustees Chairman Artee Williams said Moore “remains a valued alumnus and much-honored former athlete, with strong ties to our college.”

Lloyd Harvey has been named the interim president at the school for the time being. The search for the college’s next president will begin soon, the college said.
