Gurdon man held in ’13 N.C. killing

A 38-year-old Gurdon man was arraigned Wednesday in a federal court in El Dorado before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Bryant on a charge of kidnapping that resulted in death.

U.S. Attorney Conner Eldridge’s office said in a news release that Kevin Bolton was held at the Union County jail, pending trial. Bolton is accused of kidnapping and killing 20-year-old Cassandra Carter of Gurdon last year in Cherokee, N.C., according to the federal indictment.

In the news release, Eldridge praised the Clark County sheriff’s office and Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Blake Batson “in cooperating to see that justice is done in this case.”

A message left for Bolton’s federal public defender, Bruce Eddy of Fayetteville, was not returned Wednesday.

Messages left for investigators at the Clark County sheriff’s office and for Batson also were not returned.

Alisha Wildcat, a spokesman for the Cherokee Indian Police Department in Cherokee, N.C., said the department isn’t releasing information regarding Carter’s death, citing an ongoing investigation.
