Junior post player Hayden Long scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and he also pulled down 10 rebounds as the Eagles (21-5) earned a victory over the Cardinals (21-6).
“Hayden is a very, very good three-point shooter,” Mayflower Coach Brent Stallings said. “And Drew Duncan is a very good three-point shooter. Anytime they can get their feet set, I’m not real concerned. In the first half we shot some that I thought were a little deep. If they go in, you’re a hero. If you miss them, it’s a missed shot. We got a little closer in the second half and we got them to go down.”
Senior guard Mitch Scoggins - who led his team with 20 points - hit four three-pointers in the second half to give the Cardinals an opportunity, but it was back-to-back three-pointers by Long and Duncan that provided the Eagles with a late cushion.
Long, who had eight defensive rebounds in the first half, secured the victory by hitting six consecutive free throws in the final minute.
