Saline County gets storm cleanup aid

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is awarding Saline County more than $1.1 million for debris removal related to the 2012 Christmas Day snowstorm.

The money will reimburse 75 percent of the total $1,467,681 that the county spent after the snowstorm to clean up debris, including fallen limbs, according to a news release.

After the Dec. 25, 2012, storm, state and federal governments declared a disaster in Pulaski, Lonoke, Saline, Greene, Hempstead, Hot Spring, Garland and Faulkner counties.

The federal agency offered millions of dollars for cleanup efforts through individual matching grants, paying 75 percent of the costs. The state agreed to pay 12.5 percent, and individual cities and counties agreed to pony up the remaining 12.5 percent.

The agency has awarded more than $8.5 million to the state that’s related to the snowstorm, the release states.
