Marin watercolors given to LR center

The Arkansas Arts Center announced Friday that it has received a gift of 290 watercolors and drawings by American modern artist John Marin.

Norma Marin, the widow of John Marin Jr., the artist’s son, donated the works, according to a news release from the Arts Center. John Marin, who was born in 1870 and died in 1953, is known for his watercolors of urban landscapes and seascapes.

This donation makes the Arts Center the second-largest repository of works by John Marin in the world, surpassed only by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the release said.

“This large group of Marin drawings and watercolors adds great depth to an already strong collection of drawings by American and European modern artists,” Arts Center Executive Director Todd Herman said in the release.
