Soup Sunday ladles up $85,000 to help children

More than 1,200 attendees, many with muffin tins in hand, were served soup samples from 24 area eateries Feb. 16 at Soup Sunday. Veterans of the 33rd annual fundraiser for Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families know that the tins make it easier to carry more soup.

Large round tables filled the big Embassy Suites ballroom for the afternoon event, with tables for the overflow crowd filling conference rooms and a children’s area in the hallway. There was also a VIP Soup Room where those who sprang for a $50 ticket (twice regular admission) could watch Chef Ben Brainard of Local Lime demonstrate how to make Hatch Green Chili Stew and enjoy complimentary wine and beer as well as desserts by Ristorante Capeo and Le-Pops. Silent auction items also lined the hallway.

In the ballroom, the Big John Miller Band had kids of all ages out on the dance floor. Serving as event chairman was Khayyam Eddings with Eric McDaniel serving as silent auction chairman.

About $85,000 was raised for the nonprofit that advocates for children and their families to have the resources and opportunities to lead healthy and productive lives.
