Memphis father gets 15 years for abusing infant son

MEMPHIS — Prosecutors say a Memphis man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison without parole for beating his 7-month-old son.

The Shelby County district attorney's office said Friday that 23-year-old Ray Armstrong was sentenced after pleading guilty to aggravated child abuse involving a child under age 8.

The baby was taken to a hospital Jan. 13, 2012, in critical condition from internal bleeding and bruising. The boy also had old bruises in the healing stages.

Armstrong told investigators that the child pulled a chair on top of himself, but medical personnel determined the injuries were not consistent with Armstrong's story.

The boy's mother said Armstrong was alone with her son when she went to work and that he had no injuries when she left the boy alone with his father.
