Norphlet Volunteer Fire Deptartment wins safety prize

NORPHLET — The Norphlet Volunteer Fire Department will receive $5,000 after being selected a grand prize winner in the National Fire Protection Agency's 1,000 Safer Places: the Firewise Challenge.

The funding is to be used for activities such as chipping of brush and removing vegetation to reduce wildfire hazards.

The Arkansas Firewise program works through the Arkansas Forestry Commission as part of a national wildfire safety effort that works with local communities.

The Norphlet department's community projects have included work on the city ball park to make it fire safe by removing low limbs, dead vegetation, and cutting trees back. The department also worked to help single parents make their property safe; cleaned and burned vacant lots; and conducted fire safety education programs.
