•–––––RICHARD GORDON “DICK” COFFMAN, 83, of Little Rock died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014. He was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Aug. 13, 1930, to the late Samuel Richard and Lois McCracken Coffman. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Hal Coffman.

Dick graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Tenn., in 1948, a student athlete playing basketball, baseball and running track. He attended Athens College in Athens, Ala., from 1948-1950 and Florence State Teachers College in Florence, Ala., playing both basketball and baseball. Dick signed a professional contract to play baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Club in 1952 and was sent to Union City, Texas, to play minor league ball where he played a total of 30 games, pitching in nine. He joined the Air Force in 1952, serving during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1960.

Dick had a passion for golf. He played golf anytime, anywhere, and with anyone he could. He won the Little Rock City Golf Title in 1961 and in 1966, and competed in countless golf tournaments in the state of Arkansas throughout his life. Everyone knew he had a love for fast cars, he liked driving his multiple muscle cars and was always on the lookout for the next one. In the 1970s, he developed a talent and competitiveness for the game of table tennis. He traveled all over the country competing and winning table tennis tournaments and numerous titles throughout his table tennis playing days.

He worked in sales throughout his life and enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone. Dick never was shy to share a good story or shoot the breeze. For many years, he worked for Bale Chevrolet, delivering vehicles and doing various other duties. He loved working for the Bale Family and with everyone at the dealership.

Dick is survived by his two daughters, Keli Stroman and husband Alan, and Mala Munford and husband John all of Little Rock; his two grandchildren, Justin Stroman and wife Erin of Little Rock, and Andrew Stroman of Fayetteville; his brother, Cy Mac Coffman of Fairhope, Ala.; and close family friend, Barbara Coffman of Little Rock.

He was a wonderful Father, Grandfather, and friend. It can never be truly expressed how important his two daughters were, as they meant the world to him in his life. He was never too busy to drop everything and help out whoever needed him, wanted to talk, go out to eat, drive them somewhere, or just to listen. He will leave a great void that will be difficult to fill.

We want to thank all his multiple friends who came to see and visit with him throughout these last weeks. It meant the world to him and to all of us. He made a lot of good friends, and they are truly appreciated for their friendships and support.

•–––––BARBARA BENTON PATTY passed away on February 21, 2014, following a brief illness. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on June 22, 1943, and was raised in Fordyce, Arkansas. Her parents were Sarah Kathryn Rhodes Benton and William Robert “W.R.” Benton, Jr., both of Fordyce. She attended the Fordyce schools, graduating from Fordyce High School (Home of the Red Bugs) as Valedictorian in 1960. She then attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1964. Her time at Wellesley was very impactful and she remained a dedicated alumna throughout her life.

After graduating from Wellesley, she moved to Washington D.C. and worked in Public Affairs for the United States Department of Education from 1964 to 1966. In 1966, she returned to Arkansas and worked in the Winthrop Rockefeller Gubernatorial Campaign, then as the Executive Assistant to Lt. Governor Maurice “Footsie” Britt. Following her work with Lt. Gov. Britt, she held multiple leadership positions at the Arkansas Department of Labor from 1968 to 1971, ultimately serving as Acting Commissioner of Labor.

While living in Little Rock, she met Claibourne W. “Clay” Patty, Jr. on a blind date arranged by Richard Butler, Jr. Richard never misses an opportunity to remind Patty family members of this fact. Barbara and Clay married in May, 1968, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and had sons Claibourne, III in 1971 and Jordan in 1975.

Beginning in 1971, Barbara became a stay at home mother, but maintained an active life outside of the home. As her sons grew older, the family enjoyed many weekends in Hot Springs together and annual summer trips throughout the United States, during which time Barbara would show her sons many, many historical and geographical sites.

Throughout her time in Little Rock, Barbara was committed to her community and its advancement. Among her many activities, she was a dedicated parishioner of Christ Episcopal Church, was a member of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Guild (President, 1973-1975), served in the Volunteers in the Public Schools (President, 1979-1980), was active in the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Society (President, 1982-1983), and sang in both the Christ Episcopal Church choir and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

In the mid-1980s, Barbara pursued a new career in education. She taught fourth grade at East End Elementary from 1986 to 1988, then fifth grade at Pulaski Heights Elementary from 1990 to 1993, winning multiple awards for her teaching ability. During this time, she also obtained her Master of Science in Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1989, earning the Dean’s Citation of Excellence for her 4.0 GPA. In 1993, she moved from teaching to working in the Arkansas Department of Education, serving as the Social Studies Specialist in Academic Standards and Assessment from 1993 to 2000, then as a Program Advisor in Professional Quality Enhancement from 2000 to 2004. In 2004, Barbara decided it was time to retire.

Although technically “retired,” Barbara remained quite busy by pursuing activities that greatly enriched her life. Among her many interests, she joined the Pulaski County Master Gardner Program in 2005, working on the Clinton Library Scholars Garden and the Arkansas Arts Center Courtyards. She also became a docent at the Arkansas Arts Center, learning about many exhibits and installations while assisting visitors. Retirement also allowed Barbara more time to be more involved with the Little Rock Aesthetic Club, becoming President in 2013.

Although she had many interests in life, Barbara’s (or Bee, as her grandchildren called her) greatest joy was spending time with family, all of whom will miss her deeply but cherish her memory. Her survivors include husband, Claibourne Watkins Patty, Jr.; brother, William Evans Benton; sons (and their wives), Claibourne Watkins Patty III (April) and William Jordan Patty (Julie); beloved grandchildren, Eliza Kathryn (11), Nathaniel Claibourne (5), Eleanor Margaret (2), and Ethan Nicholas (1).

A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock on Friday, February 28, 2014, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Scott Walters officiating. A private interment will take place at Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock. The family will receive visitors at the family home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2014.

In lieu of flowers, Barbara’s family asks that memorials be made to the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the Christ Episcopal Church Endowment Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

•–––––ELKHORN CREEK, Ky. — Marvelle Johnson died in her home on Elkhorn Creek on Friday, February 21st. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late C.C. and Barbara Hoggard on May 27th, 1936. A talented pianist, at a very young age Marvelle played piano for her local church, but soon learned to bust out the boogie woogie, heavy on the left hand.

In high school she was very athletic and competitive, loving to play softball and basketball. On bus rides to basketball games, she fell for a skinny kid named Lloyd, beginning their life-long love affair with each other and the family they created. She studied psychology at Mary Hardin Baylor, Ouchita Baptist College, and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in family counseling.

In 1958, Marvelle extended her family by joining Central Baptist Church. She was one of their first woman deacons, taught Sunday School for 30+ years, and along with some dear friends started Central’s day care program.

Marvelle devoted time and passion to helping improve the lives of women and children. With the Neighborly Organization of Women, she was involved with the first Lexington community kindergarten for children in need. For many years she worked with Mother to Mother, providing oneon-one mentoring to struggling young mothers. She was trained as a CASA advocate to represent children’s needs and preferences in court cases. She also served on the board in the early days of God’s Pantry Food Bank, which continues to provide food for those in need.

In 1992, Marvelle and Lloyd left Kentucky to spend five years at Northern Arizona University. They created the STAR-PALS program, to help recruit and retain Native American students in the engineering program,. Officially employed as a counselor, Marvelle became a second mother to her students, providing love and encouragement to kids far from home. She never gave up on a student; her involvement gave many the desire and drive to finish their degree.

In fact, Marvelle became a second mother (and grandmother) to kids throughout her life, from the youth at her church, to her students at Flagstaff, to her nieces, nephews and friends of her children and grandchildren. Everyone whose life she touched recognized her gift for listening and connection. She was a trusted confidante for so many dear friends throughout her life, and a model of compassion and tolerance.

Her passion for reading and music, for cooking and dancing, for grand sunsets and tiny ferns and stones, for late-night conversations, and for all the people she loved remains with us, as does the bright light of her wide, wide smile.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lloyd Johnson, children, Robin Johnson (Diana Little), Bryce Johnson, Stephanie (Sean) Parkin; siblings Lynn (Jimmie) Taylor and Donnie (Barbara) Hoggard, and grandsons Calvin and Sam Parkin.

Please join us for a reception on Sunday, March 2 from 5-7 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, 110 Wilson Downing Drive, Lexington, Ky. 40517, followed by a Remembrance at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Marvelle Johnson Memorial Scholarship fund, which will be awarded to female engineering students at Northern Arizona University: United Bank, Marvelle Johnson Memorial, 200 East Main, Georgetown, Ky. 40324 or via Paypal to mar.scholar@gmail.com www. milwardfuneral.com.
