Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson (foreground) jokes Wednesday during a roll-call vote in the Senate that an absent senator had voted for his resolution on armed school guards.

For the second time in the past three weeks, Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson, R-Little Rock, on Wednesday failed to get enough votes in the state Senate for permission to introduce legislation to allow certain public-school employees to be licensed as private security guards.

The Senate’s 23-4 vote in support of Hutchinson’s Senate Resolution 9 fell one short of the 24 votes required to introduce the legislation in the fiscal session that started Feb. 10.

On Feb. 11, the Senate voted 19-2 in favor of Hutchinson’s resolution to authorize the introduction of the bill. That vote was five votes short.

The Senate subsequently expunged that vote to clear the way for another vote on the resolution, which took place Wednesday.

Hutchinson said Wednesday that he doesn’t plan to ask the Senate to vote on the resolution again in the fiscal session.
