Residents of Little Rock and North Little Rock should prepare for disruptions in usual traffic patterns as runners take over the streets for the Little Rock Marathon. The 5K Fun Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. Saturday but the marathon, half marathon and 10K all start at 8 a.m. Sunday, beginning and ending in downtown Little Rock. The marathon itself is sold out but the other races are $40-$85. There will also be a Health & Fitness Expo, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Statehouse Convention Center. Runners can do some carb-loading at the Pasta Party, 5-7 p.m. Saturday in the Marriott Little Rock’s Grand Ballroom, $25. A cavalcade of Christian musicians will flood North Little Rock’s Verizon Arena for Winter Jam, 7 p.m. Friday. “The Crossroads of Memory: Carroll Cloar and the American South,” 85 paintings and drawings depicting the American South, opens Friday in the Jeannette Edris Rockefeller and Townsend Wolfe galleries at the Arkansas Arts Center, MacArthur Park, Ninth and Commerce streets, Little Rock. The exhibition, up through June 1, is the result of a collaboration with the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, which showed a version of the exhibition in 2013 to mark what would have been the late artist’s 100th birthday (Cloar died in 1993). Four soloists and eight college choirs will join conductor Philip Mann and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra to perform Giuseppe Verdi’s massive Missa di Requiem, 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Robinson Center Music Hall, West Markham Street and Broadway, Little Rock. Soloists will be Elisabeth Rosenberg, soprano; Christin-Marie Hill, alto; Kevin Ray, tenor; and Adam Cioffarri, bass; the choirs are from Southern Arkansas University, the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix and Philander Smith colleges, Harding University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, plus the Arkansas Chamber Singers. Southside Main Street (SoMa) in Little Rock gears up for Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras Parade, noon Saturday. The floats, people and animals in costumes, car clubs and marching bands will follow a route from south Main and 24th streets to south Main and 12th streets.

More than 20 vendors from across the country will be showing, selling, trading and appraising fountain and ball-point pens of every age and make at the Arkansas Pen Club’s annual Arkansas Pen Show, noon-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Wyndham Riverfront hotel, 2 Riverfront Drive, North Little Rock.
The event will also feature informal classes and demonstrations on penmanship and calligraphy and a special table for people who are writing with a fountain pen for the first time. The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Guild will hold the 2014 Stella Boyle Smith Young Artists Competition for Arkansas musicians age 12-18 Saturday in the Fine Arts Building, University of Arkansas Little Rock, 2801 S. Nineteen pianists; string, bassoon, clarinet players; and percussionists will begin preliminary competition at 9 a.m., open only to teachers and parents; the 2 p.m. finals will be open to the public and admission is free.
